The law recognises that there are situations where police officers may be required to use force. The primary responsibility for using force rests with individual officers, who are answerable to the law.
Cumbria Constabulary recognise that it is vital that every use of force is recorded due to it being one of the most important and significant powers we use as police, and therefore we strive to be robust in recording every use. We changed recording systems in April-2021 and saw an initial decrease in form input due to ICT system problems. These issues have been worked on but officers have continued to provide feedback that the system is not working as intended. A temporary solution has been implemented whilst the original system is developed to the standard it should be. Due to the complexity of collating data from multiple systems, and the correction of data, the reports available to download below on the use of force by Cumbria Constabulary are published at the end of each financial year.
